BoHoma Scent Co started in 2020. Our last name is Borrego Hogan, so our friends all call us the BoHo’s. So the business name became our nickname + aroma = BoHoma! Cindy was coaching but was here at home most of the time because of the pandemic, and I was working from home since it started. I think around that time is when we were looking into having kids, and realizing how expensive it is. We had tried twice and it was unsuccessful. And it's not only the money investment, but the emotional investment that is the roughest..we've learned that it's going to happen when it's gonna happen.
We met through our sorority, it was very community service oriented, so I'm still always volunteering for something, always doing something. So during the pandemic we decided to start a new project that would also pay for all that time we’re putting in.
We first introduced fresheners in our church, we sold out in an hour. Then we launched the candles a couple of weeks afterwards. When we got into our first store, that was all that I wanted. And then other stores started reaching out to us. It was like, holy crap, we're going to be in more than one store?
I think El Paso goes hard for small businesses too. There's no cookie cutter way to be successful, just be yourself. If you try, a lot of people will want to see you succeed.
There have been many projects that have been so special. One time a lady bought a candle from us and told us the scent reminded her of her dad that passed away. She asked us for a dozen more, customized to have a picture of her father. She was giving them to her family for Easter. When she picked them up, she just broke down and cried. Her dad loved sweets and the scent that we provided just hit home. And I never would have thought that we would be helping in that way.
And that’s not even the only story like that. It feels crazy, but then again we remember that that’s why we got into this business, because scents bring up memories and nostalgia.” -Nikki and Cindy from @bohomascentco
