Misa del Gallo or “Mass of the Rooster”

Misa del Gallo or “Mass of the Rooster”

A Christmas tradition in El Chuco is the Misa del Gallo or “Mass of the Rooster” 🐓, a mass that takes place at midnight on Christmas Eve. You might be wondering… why rooster? There are many egg-celent theories regarding this! It is said that a rooster was present in baby Jesus’ birth and announced his birth by crowing. Another theory is that when Pope III wanted to have a special mass to celebrate Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ, and stated it should be held “ad galli cantus”, which translates to “when the rooster sings” from Latin. Whichever the reason for the name, the tradition holds, and you can attend the Misa del Gallo at many of our beautiful historical churches in El Paso!
