Steven and Building a Universe
GENTE DEL CHUCO: “I can never draw something without understanding it– I have to know who the character is, why they dress like that, why they wear certain jewelry or tattoos, what do they mean and symbolize? This way I can give them a better personality when I'm drawing them. I think that's why I felt so in love with creating the Lucha t-shirt design for @pdnchildrens, just doing that research and trying to implement those symbols in a way where it's, you know, hidden but still there. My biggest personal project is developing my own web comic. I've been working on it for maybe three or four years now. It was very slow process at first, having fun with these little characters, and then suddenly thinking, what if I weave a story in between these? It just kind of snowballed into this epic fantasy story that I've been developing and has recently gotten more serious into writing the plot and scripts for it. I think the bare bones of the story is kind of based on my own experience of living away from home—when you’re away from the people that raised you, trying to find who you are in a wide world of opportunity. I moved right after High School to go to art school in Colorado, and I stayed there for almost 10 years. I think a lot of that personal growth that I had to go through helped develop this story that I’ve been working on. It’s been really rewarding, and definitely challenging, finding that balance to draw while still trying to make a living. I think what helps is that I’m balancing stuff that I truly care about. I love being back home and closer to family, especially after being away for so long, that's very important to me. As well as trying to develop my own art and develop my own projects, it's something that I truly care about and want to do. And then work of course, finding a job that for me is very rewarding, where I can do what I like doing as well as work with a city that I love and came from.- @stevendonespinoza Steven designed out newest t-shirt, La Lucha Sigue, which gives back 10% of proceeds to @pdnchildrens 🫶 #Gentedelchuco #characterdesign #webcomic #elpasoartists #elpasoart #artlife
